Orania is widely regarded as a Freedom Front Plus stronghold, but election results over the years have revealed a curious political outlier: a consistent EFF vote. From four votes in 2014 to 21 in 2019, and just one vote in both the 2024 and 2026 elections, the mystery of Orania's EFF voter continues. Lester Kiewit speaks to Carel Boshoff, head of the Freedom Foundation, which started the Orania movement, about the voting trends, Orania's participation in South Africa's democratic elections and how the community balances its pursuit of self-determination with participation in the broader political system.
