Cape Town to evict 5000 homeless people from CBD pavements and open spaces

View descriptionShare

The courts have granted the City of Cape Town the right to start issuing notices of its intent to evict about 5000 homeless people living on the streets of its city centre.

Activist Carlos Mesquita is appealing to Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis to listen to solutions from the homeless themselves.

He says the City must be realistic about the task that lies ahead.

"At some point, the streets will break you and you feel like you're surviving, not living.
Whatever help can be offered, we need it, because all we are doing out here is surviving.”

- 19-year-old living on the streets.

Lester Kiewit interviewed Mesquita (listen to the audio).
