Steenhuisen warns the tariff could cripple local agriculture - impacting citrus, wine, grapes, nuts and more - and severely harm the economy and jobs. He also believes it signals the unofficial end of AGOA, the trade agreement that has long granted South Africa duty-free access to U.S. markets. While President Ramaphosa has called for continued negotiations and challenged the basis of the tariff, Steenhuisen says urgent economic reforms are now essential to soften the blow and build long-term resilience.
