Traci Kwaai, founder of the FisherChild Projekt and sixth-generation Kalk Bay Fisher Child, speaks to Lester Kiewit about her work preserving and sharing the stories of Kalk Bay’s fisher and ocean-faring communities. The FisherChild Projekt draws on indigenous ocean and plant knowledge and engages youth through snorkeling, free-diving, and community-based activities to foster love, custodianship, and reciprocity with the sea. A central element of the project is the Walk of Remembrance, which honors the histories and voices of communities whose stories have often been silenced, and this is now expanded into a virtual immersive museum, offering local and global audiences an interactive space to experience Kalk Bay’s rich heritage, layered histories, and the resilience of its people.
