Is South Africa too obsessed with matric as the golden ticket to a better future? With unemployment remaining high, questions are being raised about whether traditional academic qualifications are enough to prepare young people for the world of work. Lester Kiewit speaks to Professor Nuraan Davids, Professor of Philosophy of Education and Chair of the Department of Education Policy Studies at Stellenbosch University, about the value we place on matric, the importance of practical skills and alternative qualifications, and whether South Africa needs to rethink how education prepares young people for employment and economic opportunity.
