Shoprite’s acquisition of Vida e Caffè marks a major new chapter for the 25 year old coffee brand, which has grown from a single Kloof Street store in Cape Town to more than 410 outlets across the continent. Speaking to Lester Kiewit, Vida CEO Darren Levy said the entire team will remain with the business as it moves into the Shoprite Group, with the deal expected to help expand Vida’s reach into more communities and locations. Levy discussed South Africa’s growing coffee culture, the opportunities presented by Shoprite’s scale and distribution network, and why the future of coffee in South Africa could be about making quality espresso based coffee accessible to even more consumers.
