Shamrock Pies are now in Cape Town!

Political commentator and Business Day parliamentary correspondent Tara Roos tells Lester Kiewit that the ANC’s move to open its mayoral candidate selection process to the public is unprecedented for the party, but not new in South African politics, with other parties like the DA, ActionSA, Rise Mzansi and BOSA already using open nomination systems. She says the ANC’s shift reflects attempts to manage internal factionalism ahead of local government elections, but questions whether it will meaningfully improve candidate quality, especially as the party continues to struggle with talent pipelines shaped by past resolutions like Polokwane. Roos also points to mounting pressure in key metros, noting that the ANC has yet to announce a mayoral candidate for Johannesburg despite rivals already in the field, while in Cape Town she expects personality-driven politics to dominate, with the DA, PA, NCC and ActionSA shaping the main contest. She adds that Parliament continues to grapple with sensitive issues such as land restitution cut-off dates, after Deputy President Paul Mashatile reaffirmed the 1913 benchmark and ruled out reverting to 1652, despite ongoing debate about historical dispossession.
