Unpredictable summer weather has repeatedly stalled a planned 72-kilometre open-ocean relay swim around the Cape Peninsula, with the Relay Mermaids waiting since early January for the tight combination of light northwesterlies in False Bay, low swell and southeasterlies around Cape Point and enough sunshine to manage 9 to 12-degree Atlantic waters in only costumes, caps and goggles. Swimmer Georgina Smith spoke to Lester Kiewit about the logistical and physical challenge of attempting the roughly 30-hour relay alongside Shoneé Cornelissen, Katherine Persson and Eva Dirksen. The team is taking on the swim to raise funds for the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund in support of 13-year-old Leandro Jantjies, the Fund’s youngest recipient, who now requires lifelong assistance after a catastrophic rugby injury, and donations can be made via: https://www.givengain.com/campaign/project-13-waves-of-hope-32168
