Unpredictable summer weather has repeatedly stalled a planned 72-kilometre open-ocean relay swim around the Cape Peninsula, with the Relay Mermaids waiting since early January for the tight combination of light northwesterlies in False Bay, low swell and southeasterlies around Cape Point and enough sunshine to manage 9 to 12-degree Atlantic waters in only costumes, caps and goggles. Swimmer Georgina Smith spoke to Lester Kiewit about the logistical and physical challenge of attempting the roughly 30-hour relay alongside Shoneé Cornelissen, Katherine Persson and Eva Dirksen.
