There has been a change to the toll gate payment system across South Africa, effective 1 December 2024. This is in part due to efforts to enhance security and streamline payment processes, and the result is South African toll gates starting to migrate from traditional magstripe (swipe) payments to contactless tap functionality. Areas impacted as of 1 December 2024 are the N3 toll route from Johannesburg to Durban, the N4 toll route from Pretoria to Komatipoort, as well as Chapman's Peak and surrounding areas. To help us understand the changes and to find out which payment methods will be accepted, Lester Kiewit speaks to Vusi Mona, SANRAL spokesperson.
