Ceres-born Adriaan Wildschutt recently became the first South African to win the New York City half-marathon, hitting the finishing line in 59 minutes and 30 seconds. Wildschutt was placed 10th in the 10000m event at the Paris Olympics in 2024, and made his half-marathon debut in Valencia in October 2025, where he clocked a time of 59’13”, shaving 23 seconds off Stephen Mokoka’s previous national record. He followed his brother, Nadeel Wildschutt, to Coastal Carolina University in the United States, where the duo were coached by Zola (Budd) Pieterse. Adriaan Wildschutt was able to find a gap in his busy schedule to have a chat with Lester Kiewit.
