It is Youth Day and John Maytham is finding inspiration from our generation of youths. He speaks to Mia Leisegang, a volunteer at the National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Simon’s Town base, and also happens to be Simon’s Town’s youngest Class 3 coxswain, taking charge of a rigid inflatable boat with a crew of 4 to 6 people. Now 22 years old, Mia joined the NSRI in 2021 and has acquired a wealth of maritime knowledge in her 22 years and has a long maritime heritage, with her grandfather once being a Springbok sailor.
