Stellenbosch University has approved revised residence rules that ban the use, possession and smoking of cannabis in all university-managed student accommodation. While cannabis use is legal in certain private settings in South Africa, the university argues that residences are shared living and learning spaces rather than private homes. Lester Kiewit speaks to Dr Leslie Van Rooi, the Dean of Students, about the legal and practical implications of the policy, and how universities balance individual rights with community wellbeing.
