The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has recently warned against the use of selenium and zinc picolinate supplements for children, commonly marketed as “immune boosters.” These products can cause side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, and headaches, and selenium carries a risk of overdose. Professor Mignon McCulloch, Head of the Clinical Unit of Paediatric Nephrology and Solid Organ Transplantation at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, speaks to Lester Kiewit about the safety risks and what parents need to know before giving these supplements to their children.
