As fuel prices are set to surge by more than R4 per litre from 1 April, the impact is already being felt across Cape Town’s taxi industry, with fare increase notices appearing in several areas. Speaking to Lester Kiewit on Good Morning Cape Town, Peter Arendse of the Kensington/Factreton Taxi Association (KenFac) explained that while some associations have moved ahead with fare hikes, KenFac is holding off for now in an effort to support struggling communities. He outlined the difficult balancing act between keeping taxi businesses financially viable and ensuring commuters can still afford to travel, particularly in areas with limited public transport alternatives. Arendse also shed light on the pressure drivers face under the target system, warning that rising costs could indirectly lead to riskier behaviour on the roads as drivers try to meet higher daily earnings. With a final decision expected at their AGM in May, the conversation highlights how rising fuel prices are not only a transport issue, but part of a wider cost-of-living squeeze affecting both operators and commuters alike.
