South African cattle farmers are concerned that the Agricultural Research Council veterinary research campus in Onderstepoort has not sent any new Foot and Mouth Disease samples to the Pirbright Institute in the UK, to test whether the vaccines being produced are properly matched to the strain affecting our cattle. Of the 470 communal toilets which GroundUp counted recently in Marikana informal settlement in Philippi East, only 45 were working, and according to community leaders, more than 4,000 families live in the settlement. Lester Kiewit speaks to Nathan Geffen, Director of GroundUp News, about these stories.
