A proposed draft history curriculum for Grades 4 to 12, recently gazetted by the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, is prompting fresh debate about how South Africa’s past is taught in schools, with a shift towards more African centred content and the removal of several traditional topics. Against that backdrop, the conversation turns to which figures are remembered and which are left out of the national narrative. Nick Dall, journalist and author who has co written three books on South African history with Matthew Blackman, joined Lester Kiewit to discuss how history has been shaped, why some figures like Jan van Riebeeck remain prominent while others like Sailor Malan are overlooked, and what this means for how future generations understand South Africa’s past.
