There is a gambling crisis in South Africa. Research shows young South Africans who gamble are spending an average of 41% of their income on betting, while some middle-income gamblers are spending between 38% and 50% of their income, around 30% more than they spend on groceries. Lester Kiewit speaks to Anwar Parker, psychologist and System of Support Lead at YearBeyond, a government youth development programme that gives young people work experience while preparing them for further employment and study.
