More than a decade ago, a petition calling for Sandy Bay to be officially declared a nudist beach made headlines, arguing that formal recognition could help protect beachgoers and address concerns around harassment, exploitation and safety. Today, Sandy Bay remains an unofficial space, raising questions about what became of that petition and why designated naturist spaces still matter. Lester Kiewit speaks to naturist Juanita Pretorius and Marthinus Pretorius, both involved in organising the World Naked Bike Ride in Cape Town and active in initiatives promoting body positivity, people positivity and planet positivity. They reflect on the growth of the naturist community over the past decade, the social and environmental values that underpin it, and Marthinus shares insights from his research into South Africa’s constitutional approach to expression through nudity, exploring whether the country’s legal framework has kept pace with changing attitudes.
