As part of Women’s Month, SAPS is highlighting the work of Captain Karin Botha, a forensic social worker attached to the Germiston Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit. Botha specialises in conducting forensic interviews with child victims of abuse and trafficking, helping to ensure their voices are heard in court. Her work played an important role in the successful prosecution of three human traffickers who were sentenced to multiple life terms and additional lengthy prison sentences in April. Speaking to Lester Kiewit, Captain Botha discusses the challenges of working with traumatised children, the importance of building trust during forensic interviews, and why she considers her work a calling to give vulnerable children a voice in the pursuit of justice.
