Cape Town’s tourism boom has delivered record numbers, but much of the spending continues to favour luxury and fine-dining, leaving many small, community-based food businesses behind. Dennis Molewa, Founder of Unexplored Cape Town, speaks to Lester Kiewit about Tourism 2.0, a new model aimed at creating a more inclusive and equitable tourism economy. Molewa explains how the initiative, in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism and UCT’s Hasso Plattner d-school Afrika, uses design thinking to help black, brown, and diaspora-owned food businesses access the city’s booming visitor market. He shares insights from recent student-led challenges, exploring concepts from digital tools for small kitchens to heritage-food markets, and emphasizes the need to move beyond extractive tourism toward long-term community partnerships. Molewa highlights that the work is about ensuring Cape Town’s culinary growth benefits all, preserving culture and identity while giving visitors a deeper, more authentic experience.
