Cape Town's Oude Molen Eco Village is at the centre of a growing debate about housing, heritage and the future of the city's green spaces. The Western Cape Government wants to redevelop the site into a mixed use precinct that includes housing and commercial facilities. But tenants say the plans risk destroying an established community, its livelihoods and its environmental and cultural value. Advocate Rod Solomons, chairperson of the Oude Molen Eco Village Tenants Association, explains why residents are fighting the proposed scale of development, what the recent heritage appeal decision means and what alternatives they believe should be considered.
