Cape Town is forced to reckon with a contested part of its history as the new documentary UnRest revisits the Prestwich Street burial ground, where the remains of enslaved and displaced people were uncovered in 2003. The film explores the ongoing tension between scientific authority and community demands for the remains to be recognised and respected as ancestors. Professor Siona O’Connell, director of UnRest and Head of Historical and Heritage Studies at the University of Pretoria, speaks to Lester Kiewit about the research behind the film, the unresolved questions it raises, and what justice might look like for those long denied a voice.
