According to a study by researchers in the Faculty of Engineering at Stellenbosch University (SU), children in poorer communities are having to sit through lessons in classrooms with poor insulation and as a result experience unbearably high temperatures in summer and extreme cold in winters, with the added issue of elevated carbon dioxide levels due to efforts to stay warm by closing-off ventilation.
