In her book “The Devil made me do it – Understanding Occult Crime in South Africa”, Professor Nicky Falkof addresses why so many are quick to blame the influence of witchcraft and Satanism for some of South Africa’s most notorious crimes. Using examples such as the murder of a child mistaken for a tokoloshe in the 1920s, the satanic panic that gripped the nation in the 1980s and 1990s, the Krugersdorp cult killings of 2012–16, and the muti murder of a six-year-old girl in 2022, Falkof asks what these crimes, and the way they are represented by the media, the police and other institutions, can tell us about South Africa’s current psyche. An associate professor in media studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, Falkof speaks to Lester Kiewit about society’s fascination and obsession with linking the occult to crimes.
