Lester Kiewit speaks to Avraham (Avrum) Burg, formerly one of Israel's most influential political figures, a former Speaker of the Knesset, interim President of Israel and chairman of the Jewish Agency. Burg has spent the last two decades as one of its most searching critics, steadily moving away from the frameworks that defined his career: abandoning the two-state solution, joining the Hadash party, rejecting the instrumentalisation of the Holocaust, and challenging the ethical foundations of Israeli nationalism. He was in Cape Town where he attended the Jewish Democratic Initiative’s (JDI) second Festival of Dangerous Ideas, which took place simultaneously in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
