Forensic facial imaging artists are often called upon to create an impression of what someone might look like after being missing for a long period of time, in the hopes that they can still be found. Today we have computers which are scanning our photos and able to identify us in new uploads, even if the photos are from our youth, as they are able to track our features and overcome the changes brought about by the passage of time. Are we approaching the point where AI might be able to accurately predict what someone might look like by utilising such technology? Lester Kiewit speaks to Prof. Kathryn Smith, an Associate Professor in Visual Arts at Stellenbosch University, and a PhD-qualified forensic facial imaging specialist.
