KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Neville, together with his wife Marilyn, decided to start a business in 1974. He was 24 years old that time and didn’t have any money. They were starting a business from scratch.
  • Dyslexia didn’t stop him from doing the things he wanted to do. During the 70s, if you’re dyslexic, they see you as dumb. Aside from being enclosed with people’s wrong perception, he was also having difficulty building a career.
  • Neville worked 17 jobs. He worked as many hours as possible to be able to eat. He couldn’t believe how much he has learned from these jobs. Surviving after war was difficult. All the money he earned was put inside the business. Whatever is left is for their necessities which he says wasn’t a huge difficulty for him.
  • Entrepreneurial skills were already showing when he was a kid. He was always motivated to earn money. His father, a skilled carpenter, motivated him to be self-employed.
  • Regret is a big influencer. What’s the worst thing that could happen? If there’s a problem, you go forward. Just remember not to hold back when you do it. And if you go forward, look at what you did then to learn from them.
  • Timing. Make the right decision at the right time. Know when the margin gets smaller or market’s going to change.
  • It’s a different type of freedom in your workspace if you let everyone be in control. There are 120 people who worked in Kiddicare and Neville is sure that each one of them really wanted to stay work for the company. Not just forced to finance their necessities. They felt that they have the responsibility to freely do what they are passionate about inside the company. Aside from that, their positions and tasks are designed to cater to what they want to achieve from themselves and for the company.

BEST MOMENTS

  • "If he [Muhammad Ali] could lower himself from the champion boxer of the world to champion dustbin collector, then what's wrong with that? If that's the case, I can do it. I can be the champion window cleaner. It's all in the mind. It's the mindset."
  • "Don't give up. You can get through it. You might as well work for yourself."
  • "I never ever will say 'I should have'. I always will do it. Saying it and doing it are two different things."

ABOUT THE HOST

Jay Dhillon is a serial entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist based in the UK with a proven track record of growing businesses from start-up to success- and helping others do the same. From humble beginnings, Jay grew his first business from 0-500 employees and three locations, racking up sales of over £30 million – all without any investment other than a small amount of savings. The business went on to acquire major clients such as Landrover, Jaguar, Toyota and New Look, to name a few.

Its huge success inevitably brought about outside interest and at the age of 33, Jay eventually sold the company to a London investment firm in Doyen Resources. Today, Jay owns several businesses in different sectors and helps entrepreneurs achieve success.

A calling to give back and help others led to Jay being chosen for the highly-coveted role as a Prince’s Trust mentor, where his achievements were marked by a personal invitation to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Charles.

After helping several young entrepreneurs to success as a mentor for the Trust, Jay’s burning desire to bring his wisdom and knowledge to a wider audience ultimately triggered the concept of The Business Mentor Podcast.

Jay feels that anyone can achieve success in business with the right advice and mentoring and is now sharing his knowledge with his growing audience via his podcast.

In the UK alone 95% of business fail within the first five years and Jay’s aim is to reduce that number.

Backed with the hard-earned knowledge and experience from his time in business, The Business Mentor Podcast will share Jay’s personal business lessons as well those of other successful entrepreneur guests who share their wisdom and secrets on the show.
