KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The beginning of the journey

I went through university studying marketing and retail but still didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do. Entrepreneurs were very much a part of our family. My mum broke down barriers in her work as the first lady Asian driving instructor in Midlands alongside her role as a social worker.

  • When there was an opportunity to take over a cake business and I went for it.

I didn’t know anything about baking and had to work my way up from the bottom. I worked with the previous owners and learnt from them.

I started at the grassroots of baking, learnt all about that and then was able to begin learning about decoration. I have always been creative, so the decorating was an exciting prospect. I took the skills I learnt and then practised extensively. I had no other option other than to practice non-stop, it's not glamorous.

As a business owner you’ve got realise that you are always learning. Lots of business owners fail to recognise this and it is damaging to their businesses.

  • Knowing your worth

You take on everything when you start, whether you can do it or not – it’s being a busy fool, you need to understand your skills and worth and develop the confidence to say no in some circumstances.

Why do all those hours if you are going to end up with something the customer doesn’t want, there is no profit involved and you potentially damage your reputation.

  • Reputation is everything

If you have a product or service you must take a long-term view. With the reviews we have, as part of service, the market will call you out. Sometimes you may not be able to compete on price but can offer great service.

  • Doors opening

I had the opportunity to make a cake for Floyd Mayweather and the media coverage opened lots of new doors. Following the positive media, I networked to secure more work with high profile celebrities. This was important as I was aware the initial media interest in the Floyd cake was limited so I wanted to make sure I could continue the wave.

  • Future plans for the business

I am going to launch my own YouTube video series and brand aimed with the celebrity cakes as I want to see how far I can go with this and I am still very involved in the day to day aspects of the cake shop

My passion is the designing of cakes where I’m given a brief and have the opportunity to be creative doing new things.

  • Key lessons

There is no short cut, I had to wash pots and work my way up

You have to keep doing it over and over, don’t give up something will happen

With patience and hard work, you will create the luck

ABOUT THE HOST

Jay Dhillon is a serial entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist based in the UK with a proven track record of growing businesses from start-up to success- and helping others do the same. From humble beginnings, Jay grew his first business from 0-500 employees and three locations, racking up sales of over £30 million – all without any investment other than a small amount of savings. The business went on to acquire major clients such as Landrover, Jaguar, Toyota and New Look, to name a few.

Its huge success inevitably brought about outside interest and at the age 33, Jay eventually sold the company to a London investment firm in Doyen Resources. Today, Jay owns several businesses in different sectors and helps entrepreneurs achieve success.

A calling to give back and help others led to Jay being chosen for the highly-coveted role as a Prince’s Trust mentor, where his achievements were marked by a personal invitation to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Charles.

After helping several young entrepreneurs to success as a mentor for the Trust, Jay’s burning desire to bring his wisdom and knowledge to a wider audience ultimately triggered the concept of The Business Mentor Podcast.

Jay feels that anyone can achieve success in business with the right advice and mentoring and is now sharing his knowledge with his growing audience via his podcast.

In the UK alone 95% of business fail within the first five years and Jay’s aim is to reduce that number.

Backed with the hard-earned knowledge and experience from his time in business, The Business Mentor Podcast will share Jay’s personal business lessons as well those of other successful entrepreneur guests who share their wisdom and secrets on the show.
