KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Rob: People say that it’s better to learn from your mistakes, I think that’s bad advice, it’s better to learn from the mistakes of others who have been there and made them. The people who have spent the money and had the difficulty and then you can benefit from it. It’s a vicarious experience learning from a group of mentors, known as a mastermind.
  • Jay: My first mentor was in 2008 when the recession hit, his name is Mike Osbourne and he inspired me to focus on sales, keep going forward and to persevere and it changed my life.
  • Rob: I’ve had mentors and I’ve paid thousands to have them. One of my mentors was James Caan and that was a huge expense, at the time my business had about 12 employees so it was quite small. He showed me that people inspire people but documents and systems manage people. John De Martini has shown me how to see the upside in the downside and the downside in the upside. I’ve had a lot of mentors that have really helped me super-charge my business and add value to my products and services.

  • When you do something for the first time you act like a child and you feel like you’re alone. But you don’t have to be, wouldn’t it be great if you could call on someone who’s been there before and has the answer? To them the situation is normal and they know how to get you out of it.

  • Some people think you get a mentor once you become successful. This isn’t the case, they become successful because they had a mentor. Find the people that are further down the road than you and use and leverage them to drag you up to the next level. Yes, it can be expensive but you need to think about the opportunity cost of not doing it, not getting a mentor.
  • A mentor or a peer group in your industry and your niche has already assimilated all the information out there that you need to be successful. There’s not a lack of information out there, there’s a lack of resources in making that information relevant and implementing it in your business. That’s what a mentor can do for you.
  • Accountability is essential to success, its the ingredient you need in order to meet deadlines and get more done. When you are around productive and proactive energetic people you will rise to the top and take ownership of what you want to achieve.

ABOUT THE HOST

Jay Dhillon is a serial entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist based in the UK with a proven track record of growing businesses from start-up to success- and helping others do the same. From humble beginnings, Jay grew his first business from 0-500 employees and three locations, racking up sales of over £30 million – all without any investment other than a small amount of savings. The business went on to acquire major clients such as Landrover, Jaguar, Toyota and New Look, to name a few.

Its huge success inevitably brought about outside interest and at the age 33 Jay eventually sold the company to a London investment firm in Doyen Resources. Today, Jay owns several businesses in different sectors and helps entrepreneurs achieve success.

A calling to give back and help others led to Jay being chosen for the highly-coveted role as a Prince’s Trust mentor, where his achievements were marked by a personal invitation to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Charles.

After helping several young entrepreneurs to success as a mentor for the Trust, Jay’s burning desire to bring his wisdom and knowledge to a wider audience ultimately triggered the concept of The Business Mentor Podcast.

Jay feels that anyone can achieve success in business with the right advice and mentoring and is now sharing his knowledge with his growing audience via his podcast.

In the UK alone 95% of business fail within the first five years and Jay’s aim is to reduce that number.

Backed with the hard-earned knowledge and experience from his time in business, The Business Mentor Podcast will share Jay’s personal business lessons as well those of other successful entrepreneur guests who share their wisdom and secrets on the show.
