Today marks World Electric vehicle (EV) Day and we speak to De Wet Taljaard, Technical Advisor at Investec Sustainable Solutions who says that the next phase of electric mobility will be determined by whether consumers believe the economics of EV ownership stack up over the long term.
EV sales are said to be accelerating globally and locally, with South Africa's new-energy vehicle market growing 31.5% in the first quarter of 2026. Yet despite the momentum, industry experts argue that the biggest barrier to mass adoption is no longer affordability. What is truly needed if EVs are to move from an early-adopter product to a mainstream transport solution?
