The 2026 edition of Investing in African Mining Indaba concluded in Cape Town, South Africa, underscoring Africa’s central role in a renewed geopolitical race for critical minerals. Copper, lithium and other strategic resources are increasingly viewed as essential to global defence, energy security and artificial‑intelligence development.
A key focus this year was the US‑backed Lobito Corridor, a major infrastructure initiative aligned with the Trump administration’s 2026 critical minerals agenda. The project aims to diversify copper and cobalt supply chains away from Chinese dominance by linking the mineral‑rich Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia to Angola’s Atlantic coast.
Thami Ngubeni spoke to Abigail Hunter, Executive Director of the Centre for Critical Minerals at Securing America’s Future Energy.
