Tongaat Hulett has filed for provisional liquidation, following repeated warnings from the sugar industry urging the government to intervene to prevent the sector's collapse.
The potential closure of the 134-year-old company threatens not only the industry's stability but also the livelihoods of thousands of workers. Tongaat Hulett initially entered business rescue proceedings in 2019, after suffering a catastrophic decline triggered by an accounting fraud scandal.
