Tongaat Hulett files for provisional liquidation

View descriptionShare

Tongaat Hulett has filed for provisional liquidation, following repeated warnings from the sugar industry urging the government to intervene to prevent the sector's collapse.

The potential closure of the 134-year-old company threatens not only the industry's stability but also the livelihoods of thousands of workers. Tongaat Hulett initially entered business rescue proceedings in 2019, after suffering a catastrophic decline triggered by an accounting fraud scandal.

Thami Ngubeni spoke to the deputy general secretary of the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU), Edwin Mabowa.
