The unemployment rate in SA rose in the first quarter of 2025

South Africa's unemployment rate rose in the first quarter of this year from 31.9 per cent to 32.9 per cent. The expanded definition of unemployment, which includes those discouraged from looking for work, rose to 43.1% from 41.9%. Unemployment has been on the rise since 2016 and has been stuck above 30% for the past five years. An Economist at Anchor Capital, Casey Sprake, says South Africa's unemployment problem is a complex and multifaceted issue that requires sustained and coordinated efforts from all sectors of society.
