New statistics released this Thursday by Statistics South Africa, show that poverty levels in the country have declined over a 17-year period, but millions of households remain vulnerable.

The Poverty Trends in South Africa Report tracks changes between 2006 and 2023, examining differences across gender, age groups, and household structures.

The threat actors claim to have successfully breached the agency responsible for conducting South Africa's census, as well as producing and disseminating other official statistics, like the Consumer Price Index. This cyber attack, it's said to have come at a time when ransomware attacks are escalating globally, reflecting a sharp rise in the frequency and sophistication of cybercrime.
