South African supermarket chain Checkers is set to introduce the country’s first smart shopping trolley, known as the Xpress Trolley.
The innovation will allow customers to scan items, pack them directly into bags, track a running total while shopping, and pay on the trolley itself, eliminating the need to queue or repack goods at a traditional till point.
However, the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU) has raised concerns about the potential impact on jobs in the retail sector.
Thami Ngubeni spoke to SACCAWU’s Deputy General Secretary.
