South African government reviews appeals against environmental authorisations for offshore oil and gas projects

View descriptionShare

The South African government is currently reviewing appeals lodged against environmental authorisations granted for several offshore oil and gas exploration projects. The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Willie Aucamp, says the move is aimed at preventing further “decision paralysis” in the sector.

He emphasised that the department has a legal and constitutional responsibility to make timely decisions that support inclusive economic growth, while balancing environmental protection with the country’s development needs.

Thami Ngubeni spoke to Dr Ross Compton, Senior Director of Global Policy at EnerGeo Alliance.
