Public health advocates are raising concerns about the continued influence of the tobacco industry on policymaking in South Africa. The concerns were highlighted during the launch of the 2025 Tobacco Industry Interference Index Report, which measures how effectively governments protect public health policies from the commercial interests of the tobacco industry.
The report indicates that South Africa continues to face challenges in reducing tobacco industry interference, despite repeated recommendations to strengthen safeguards.
