South Africa's consumer price inflation has eased slightly, offering modest relief to households. The latest figures from Statistics South Africa show that annual inflation slowed to 3.5 per cent in November, down from 3.6 per cent in October. This marks the second slowdown in year-on-year inflation this year, following a similar decline in March. Stats SA says price pressures eased in five of the thirteen product categories. The Government of Zimbabwe has formally banned all foreign nationals from participating in the country's artisanal mining sector. The new regulations, which came into immediate effect this month, designate artisanal mining as a sector exclusively reserved for Zimbabweans. This means foreign nationals are prohibited from owning, operating, financing or exercising beneficial control over artisanal mining activities in the country. Thami Ngubeni spoke to independent policy researcher and political economist, Kevin Tutani.

This year has seen renewed engagement with international lenders, a drive to liberalise key sectors such as telecoms and finance, and cautious optimism about growth prospects.
