A newly released report shows that South Africa is a country still committed to democracy, but struggling with deep social challenges. This is contained in the 2025 South African Reconciliation Barometer conducted by the Institute of Justice and Reconcilliation.

The study also shows that trust in political parties and public institutions remains low.

Farmers in Kassala State in the eastern part of the country have begun harvesting sorghum in what the UN World Food Programme (WFP) calls a major breakthrough for local food production.

Supported by the World Bank–funded THABAT project, sixteen-thousand farmers across three states have revived nearly forty-four thousand feddans of land with seeds, fertilizers, and training, offering a lifeline to communities facing acute food insecurity. With both the summer sorghum harvest underway and the winter wheat season advancing, this marks a critical step toward restoring stability and rebuilding local markets.

Farmers in Eastern Sudan harvest sorghum in a major breakthrough for local food production

South Africa has launched a nationwide foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccination drive to protect the national cattle herd, safeguard the red meat industry, and also regain access to international markets.

The country's Department of Agriculture has placed an order for 2 million vaccine doses with the Botswana Vaccine Institute (BVI), which are expected to start arriving in the country by the end of December.
