The National Informal Traders Alliance of South Africa has joined calls urging President Cyril Ramaphosa to extend the deadline for informal shops, better known as spaza shops, business registration.

Today marks the final day for spaza shops and food-handling stores to comply with the president's directive, issued in response to recent incidents of alleged food poisoning.

National Informal Traders Alliance of South Africa called on Ramaphosa to extend the deadline for spaza shops registration

South Africans found fronting or assisting foreign nationals in any way to register tuckshops in the country, will face arrest and criminal prosecution, according to the Department of Home Affairs.

The department says the country's immigration act makes it a criminal offence to provide any assistance to foreign nationals regardless of whether they are illegal or not to operate tuckshops or spaza shops in South Africa, it says only citizens have that right. Various government departments briefed the media this morning about its decision to grant business owners wishing to register their tuckshops or other food handling businesses 10 more weeks to register in line with regulations.

2025 Economic Outlook for South Africa 

Lawyers for the Congolese government have filed criminal complaints against Apple subsidiaries in France and Belgium, accusing the tech firm of using conflict minerals in its supply chain, Congo is a major source of tin, tantalum and tungsten, so-called 3T minerals used in computers and mobile phones.

 According to U.N. experts and human rights groups, some artisanal mines are run by armed groups involved in massacres of civilians, mass rapes, looting and other crimes,. Apple says it does not directly source primary minerals and says it audits suppliers, publishes findings and funds bodies that seek to improve mineral traceability, but international lawyers representing DRC argue that Apple uses minerals pillaged from DRC and laundered through international supply chains, which they say renders the firm complicit in crimes taking place in DRC.

Thami Ngubeni spoke to Smith Etumba Kashinde who is a former African Union Youth Charter representative for DRC, an expert in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
