Meta hosts a Small Business Forum at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in South Africa

Absa says South Africa’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market is growing steadily, with vehicle sales rising sharply in recent years. To test the country’s readiness for wider adoption, two Absa executives recently completed a three‑day electric‑vehicle journey covering more than 4 000 kilometres from Johannesburg to Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.


One of the executives, Tebogo Maphothoma, Executive for Operations and Enablement at Absa Vehicle Asset Finance, says the journey highlighted ongoing infrastructure gaps, limited consumer awareness and broader ecosystem challenges that could slow the NEV transition.

Absa looks at SA’s readiness for a large‑scale transition to new energy vehicles

South Africa’s vehicle buying and selling service, WeBuyCars, has announced that its co‑founders and co‑CEOs, Faan and Dirk van der Walt, have sold approximately $54.3 millions worth of shares in the company. The sale, aimed at personal investment diversification and estate planning, marks the first time the founders have sold shares since WeBuyCars listed on the JSE on April 11, 2024.


Founded in 2001, the company now operates around 18 vehicle supermarkets and more than 100 buying pods, and reportedly trades over 15 000 cars a month across South Africa.

Tanzania’s Finance Minister, Khamis Mussa Omar, has announced that the country plans to increase its total spending by 10% to 24.29 billion US dollars in the upcoming fiscal year. The move comes as the East African nation faces heightened financial pressure to fund development projects following the withdrawal of budget support from key partners, including the United States and the European Union.
Minister Omar also projected that the economy will expand by 6.3% in 2026, up from 5.9% in the previous year.
