More than ten African countries including Malawi, Zimbabwe and Botswana are represented at the 2024 Manufacturing Indaba in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The two-day event, which ends later this afternoon, is taking place under the theme: "Localisations in Africa".  

Key industry stakeholders, innovators, and government leaders in the manufacturing sector have been discussing ways to expand manufacturing across the continent at this meeting.

Zambia's Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has suspended all livestock import permits from South Africa, following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). This, as South Africa continues to grapple with a severe Foot-and-Mouth Disease outbreak that has been declared a National Disaster by the country's President Cyril Ramaphosa. The outbreak has devastated the livestock industry, leading to immediate trade bans from countries like China, Namibia, Botswana and now Zambia. South Africa's Department of Agriculture continues to vaccinate the national herd as countries suspend livestock imports following the FMD outbreak 

South Africa's official unemployment rate has declined slightly to 31.4 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2025. According to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey, the number of employed persons increased by 44,000 to reach 17.1 million, while the number of unemployed people fell by 172,000 to 7.8 million compared to the previous quarter. As a result, the labour force shrank by 128,000, contributing to a 0.5 percentage point drop in the unemployment rate.  In this package, Channel Africa's economics reporter, Innocent Semosa, took to the streets to hear directly from citizens about how this reality is impacting their daily lives.
