The CEO OF the UK-Malawi Chamber of Commerce, Hannington Gondwe says Malawi's reliance on the tobacco industry is both a blessing and a curse. He says even though the industry reached a record-breaking milestone in 2024, generating over $545 million in export earnings from $389 million in 2023- it doesn't take away the unsustainable risk posed by the over-reliance on the crop by the Southern African country. The Sustainable Development Initiative (SDI) also highlights the need for the Malawian government's intervention in the tobacco diversification agenda, as decades of tobacco reliance have failed to yield economic prosperity. Thami Ngubeni spoke to the CEO OF UK-Malawi Chamber of Commerce, Hannington Gondwe.
