Making smart phones accessible to everybody

View descriptionShare

We end the show by talking about how easy it's becoming to access a cellphone these days. Yes many of us do remember the hurdles one had to go through to access a phone, but now to get a smart phone is as easy as ABC.  Limited to basic functions, cell phones gave us more freedom to call and message on the go, but they were a convenience rather than a necessity. You could still get by without one.

With a landline at home, a pay phone down the road, people had other ways to communicate. Today, that is a very different story. Whether we need to drive to an unfamiliar location, make an urgent payment or access work platforms without our laptops - the functions we once managed through a number of different devices, now all sit on our smartphones. And this dependence is reflected in the role mobile technology now plays in the wider economy.

According to the GSMA, it contributed $240 billion in 2025, or 7.8% of the continent's GDP, and is expected to reach $290 billion by 2030, highlighting just how central mobile technology is becoming to how Africa's economy works and grows.

To talk more on this and how companies like PayJoy are making it easy, Thami Ngubeni spoke to  Shaun Durandt, Head of Business Development at PayJoy, a smartphone rental provider.
