Across many African economies, the informal sector remains both a lifeline and a challenge. A new report by Moody’s Ratings reveals that about 55% of Nigeria’s economy operates outside the formal tax system. However, countries such as Rwanda have reduced informality, while Benin and Tanzania are examples of economies where informality remains high and continues to constrain revenue collection and governance.
