India considers imposing a ban on the export of numerous rice varieties

View descriptionShare

India is considering imposing a ban on the export of numerous rice varieties. This proposed measure, if implemented, could further elevate the already soaring global prices of this food staple,  as the disruptive El Niño weather phenomenon reemerges. India is the largest exporter of rice in the world.

In recent months, there's been an increase in global prices influenced by limited global rice supplies. South Africa relies heavily in imports for it's rice requirements. Estimates indicate that the country imports 90 percent of the rice to meet the population's demand.

To discus this further Lulu Gaboo spoke to  Thabile Nkunjana, Senior Economist at the National Agricultural Marketing Council.
