GIWUSA calls for the rehabilitation of hundreds of abandoned gold and platinum mines in South Africa

View descriptionShare

As gold prices continue to surge past $5 000 an ounce, the General Industrial Workers Union of South Africa (GIWUSA) has called on the government to take decisive action on hundreds of abandoned and care‑and‑maintenance gold and platinum mines.

The union says the rise in mineral values underscores the need to rehabilitate these mines, prevent them from lying fallow and consider their expropriation. Thami Ngubeni spoke to Mametlwe Sebei, President of the General Industrial Workers Union of South Africa.
