Ghana overhauls mining law to strengthen community benefits, governance

View descriptionShare

Ghana is undertaking major reforms to its Minerals and Mining Act and mining policy, aiming to shorten mining licence durations and mandate direct revenue-sharing with local communities.

According to Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, the changes, such as the scrapping of automatic licence renewals, will apply only to future contracts.

The overhaul seeks to improve governance and ensure that local communities benefit more directly from the country’s mineral wealth. Thabiso Lehoko spoke to George Antwi-Boasiako, an Economist based in Ghana, for further insight.
