Ford South Africa has announced plans to cut more than 470 jobs as it seeks to align production with current and future market demands.
The automaker confirmed that 391 operator roles will be affected at its Silverton car assembly plant in Pretoria, along with 73 positions at the Struandale engine plant in Gqeberha and 10 administrative posts.
Labour union Solidarity has criticised the decision, saying it reflects the combined weight of economic pressures, international political uncertainties, and government policies that are making South Africa’s automotive industry less competitive.
Speaking to Channel Africa, Solidarity’s deputy general secretary, Willie Venter, said the retrenchments underline the fragile state of the sector and the risks posed to long-term employment.
